Pakistan's former Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif, recently admitted that Pakistan violated the Lahore Agreement signed with India in 1999. He indirectly blamed General Pervez Musharraf for the Kargil War. Sharif made these comments during a meeting with his party members, marking 25 years since Pakistan's first nuclear test. The remarks were broadcasted by the Pakistani government channel.
On May 28, 1998, Pakistan conducted five nuclear tests. Following this, Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee visited Pakistan, leading to the Lahore Declaration. However, Sharif stated, "We violated the agreement. It was our mistake."
The Lahore Declaration aimed to establish peace and improve relations between the two countries. But just months later, Nawaz Sharif authorized infiltrations in Jammu and Kashmir's Kargil district, leading to the Kargil War, where Pakistan faced defeat.
Sharif also revealed that U.S. President Bill Clinton had offered $5 billion in financial aid to prevent Pakistan from conducting nuclear tests, which he refused. He opined that if Imran Khan had been in his place, he would have accepted Clinton's offer. Sharif accused Pakistan's intelligence agency ISI of conspiring against him to install Imran Khan as Prime Minister, resulting in cases filed against him.
