Despite his determination to run for a second term, the 81-year-old U.S. President Joe Biden, struggling with old age and health issues, might be stepping back from the Democratic Party's presidential race. Reports suggest that Biden has agreed to step down as the Democratic candidate.
Journalist and Newsmax host Mark Halperin disclosed that Biden has refused to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris's candidacy. It is speculated that Biden might announce his decision by Sunday, but neither he nor his campaign team has officially responded yet.
The Democratic National Convention, set to take place next month, will finalize the party's candidate. Until recently, former President Barack Obama and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi supported Biden but have recently expressed concerns over his health. Biden has also contracted COVID-19 recently.
Obama reportedly told party insiders that Biden's chances of victory have diminished significantly, suggesting he seriously reconsider running for a second term, according to The Washington Post. Following a weak performance in a debate with former President Donald Trump, many Democratic senators, House members, and senior leaders have urged Biden to step aside. Pelosi has also tried to convince Biden that staying in the race might lead to defeat.
Currently, Biden is in isolation in Delaware due to COVID-19. He has urged people to disregard any unfounded speculations about his candidacy.
