The third episode of the fifth season, titled "The Jewel of Denial", aired on October 10, 2011 on The CW. The episode was directed by Larry Shaw and written by Amanda Lasher. The episode received mixed reviews from critics and viewers, who praised the performances of the cast, but criticized the plot and the character development.

Plot summary

The episode begins with Serena (Blake Lively) returning to New York from Los Angeles, where she has been working as a production assistant for a movie studio. She is greeted by Nate (Chace Crawford), who has been having an affair with Diana Payne (Elizabeth Hurley), a mysterious older woman who runs The New York Spectator, a rival newspaper of The New York Times. Diana has hired Nate as her assistant and has been using him to get exclusive scoops on the Upper East Side. Serena is unaware of Nate's relationship with Diana and hopes to rekindle their romance.

Meanwhile, Blair (Leighton Meester) is still pregnant with either Chuck's (Ed Westwick) or Louis' (Hugo Becker) baby. She decides to take a paternity test, but is afraid of the results. She asks Dan (Penn Badgley) to accompany her to the doctor's office, where they run into Chuck, who has been trying to help Dan cope with his newfound fame as the author of Inside, a tell-all novel based on his experiences with the Upper East Side elite. Chuck offers to pay for Blair's test and tells her that he will support her no matter what. Blair agrees, but asks him not to tell anyone about her pregnancy.

At the same time, Ivy (Kaylee DeFer), who has been posing as Charlie, Serena's cousin, is also working at The New York Spectator as an intern. She is assigned to write a gossip column about the Upper East Side, but she finds it hard to keep up with her lies. She meets Max (Brian J. Smith), a chef who recognizes her from their past in Florida. Max confronts Ivy and threatens to expose her identity unless she pays him $500,000.

The episode ends with Blair receiving the results of her paternity test in a sealed envelope. She decides not to open it and tells Dan that she will marry Louis regardless of who the father is. However, as she leaves Dan's apartment, she drops the envelope on the floor. Dan picks it up and opens it, revealing the identity of Blair's baby daddy.

Reception

The episode was watched by 1.37 million viewers and received a 0.7 rating in the 18-49 demographic, according to Nielsen ratings. This was a slight increase from the previous episode, which had 1.36 million viewers and a 0.6 rating. The episode ranked fourth in its time slot behind Dancing with the Stars, Two and a Half Men, and Terra Nova.

The episode received mixed reviews from critics and viewers. Jessica Shaw of Entertainment Weekly gave the episode a B+ grade and wrote: "The Jewel of Denial was one of those episodes that reminded me why I love Gossip Girl so much: It was full of intrigue, romance, humor, and heartbreak." However, she also criticized some aspects of the episode, such as Nate's affair with Diana and Ivy's blackmail plot. She also expressed disappointment with the reveal of Blair's baby daddy, saying: "I was hoping for a more shocking twist."

Julia Chen of TV Fanatic gave the episode a 3 out of 5 stars rating and wrote: "The Jewel of Denial was an improvement over last week's lackluster installment, but it still left much to be desired." She praised Ed Westwick's performance as Chuck and his chemistry with Leighton Meester as Blair, but criticized Blake Lively's performance as Serena and her storyline with Nate and Diana. She also found Ivy's storyline boring and unrealistic.
